Historical facts about the district Leopoldstadt
Leopoldstadt, also known as the 2nd district of Vienna, has a rich history dating back to the 14th century. Originally, the area was known as ""Unterer Werd"" and was first settled around 1300. In 1624, the Jews were banished from the city by Emperor Ferdinand II and the Untere Werd was assigned to them as a residential area. This led to the creation of the so-called ""Mazzesinsel"", which got its name from the numerous matzo bakers who produced the unleavened bread for Jewish festivals. Despite repeated repressions, Jews kept returning to this part of the city, which constituted a considerable part of the population of the 2nd district until the Holocaust. In the 17th century, Leopoldstadt was named after Emperor Leopold I, and a church was built in his honor in 1671. In the 18th century, the Prater and Augarten were opened to the public, leading to the development of these areas as popular recreational areas. Leopoldstadt has undergone several changes over the centuries, including the separation of parts of the district to form new districts. Despite these changes, Leopoldstadt remains a district with a rich history and culture.
